Description

This illustration was created for a personal art journals of pagan prayers, blessings and spells. The book will never be published and will remain as a single copy. I ask that you respect this and do not capture facsimiles of these pages.

This personal art journal fashioned in the style of the medieval Book of Hours. A Book of Hours is an illuminated manuscript, Christian devotional book that was popular among the Christians of Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. Thousands of these books were created as a single copys with elaborate borders and illustrations. Because of the amount of time and money to create these books they were usually owned by the wealthy class. The books contained many different prayers sometimes used for meditation and accompanying mass. My own Book of Prayers contains pagan prayers, blessing and spells that celebrate life through a changing season. I plan to work on this project throughout the year hopefully completing it by Samhain, October 31 of 2013. I am using several sources for the content, most notably one of my favorite books from my personal collection is two Books, A Pagan Ritual Prayer Book and Pagan Prayers by Ceisiwr Serith. These is the closest book I have to a traditional Bible and I refer to it constantly for inspiration and the creation of my own personal prayers. The author has done an extraordinary job in researching and compiling prayers from many pagan cultures throughout the world. Another major source for content comes from a Pagan Book of Hours, Order of the Horae, First Kingdom Church of Asphodel.

Ouside Border Is based on the work of The Limbourg brothers.

The Limbourg brothers (active ca. 1399-1416) were Netherlandish illuminators in the service of the French Duke of Berry. They are the most famous of all medieval miniature painters and among the foremost exponents of the International Gothic style. The Limbourg brothers, or in Dutch Gebroeders van Limburg (Herman, Paul, and Johan; fl. 1385 – 1416), were famous Dutch miniature painters from the city of Nijmegen. They were active in the early 15th century in France and Burgundy, working in the style known as International Gothic. They created what is certainly the best known late medieval illuminated manuscript, the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. [link]
